Shitty week, part one

By kate on January 8th, 2004

Yesterday involved two “adventures”:

First, I managed to wangle the day off to go skiing (because I worked over the break). I checked the road conditions in the morning and found that Snoqualmie Pass (where we planned to go) was closed.

Ok, no problem, so we headed to Crystal. Both the website and the phone line for Crystal trumpeted 10 inches of new powder and nothing else. When we got to Enumclaw, however, we came upon a line of cars headed for the mountain that were parked on the side of the road. We joined the line and learned (eventually) that the road had been blocked by snow since 6:30 am! They had cleared the road okay but were waiting for Puget Power to move a downed power line. After sitting in the line for an hour and a half, I did some math. If they let us go at that point, I’d get no more than three hours of skiing (because Crystal closes at 4).

We gave up, turned around, and I went straight to work in my sweats and snow boots.

( to be continued… )

What would YOU do?

By kate on December 19th, 2003

Phil Keoghan, who hosts my favorite current TV show (The Amazing Race), also has a new Discovery Channel show called No Opportunity Wasted.

The premise is that it helps people achieve some kind of dream: they get 72 hours and $3000 to do whatever they wish. Check out the site for more info – it sounds like an interesting idea.

My question is: What would YOU do if you were on the show?

They are accepting applications until December 31st, so you could still apply if you have a good idea. The site has some suggestions to get the ideas flowing. The cool part is that if they choose you, you don’t know until they show up at work and take you away.

Let ’em know what America really thinks

By kate on December 19th, 2003

My friend Michael sent me this, and since none of the journals I read have posted it yet, here ya go:

Want to annoy the (antigay) American Family Association? They are conducting an online poll about gay marriage, and plan to show their results to Congress. When I took it, it said 93% oppose same-sex marriage and civil unions, and that 3% are in favor. Of course, it begs the question, who are they polling? Well, some friends and I decided we needed some OTHER input.

Go here: http://www.marriagepoll.com

C’mon, help us skew their results! It takes a few seconds of your time. Send it to your friends!

Server downtime

By kate on December 17th, 2003

FYI, if you have an account on my server:

We ordered a second static IP address from my ISP. However, in doing that they somehow reset our connection. It only took a minute or two, but it requires that I reboot the DSL modem, and neither Steve or I are at home to do that.

So, until we arrive home (probably around 7:45), you will not be able to access anything on the server.

Sorry! I didn’t know the reboot would be necessary until it was too late.

Sick!

By kate on November 25th, 2003

I took off work last Tuesday because I was “sick”. I did have a bit of a sore throat, but I also was just tired and didn’t feel like working. I played hooky more than anything else.

My karma has come right back to me, though, because after that I got ACTUALLY sick. I took Wednesday off work, too, feeling worse. Then, I felt like I had to go back to work, even though I wasn’t any better. I worked Thursday feeling like crap. Friday and today I’ve continued to have my low-level cold at work. It comes and goes, but overall I feel sick.

Okay! I’m sorry for skipping work! Please let me get better so I don’t have a lousy long weekend!

Mix CD

By kate on November 20th, 2003

Last week, I made a mix CD for my friend Zach with a bunch of songs I’ve been into lately (and that I thought he might not know). It turned out really well – I put a lot of work into putting the songs in order so the transitions between each song sound good. I can’t stop listening to it. Anyway, here is the track list:

1. Take California – Propellerheads

2. Raja Vedalu – DJ Cheb i Sabbah

3. Keep Hope Alive [AK 1200’s Wild Ride] – Crystal Method

4. Spybreak! – Propellerheads

5. James Bond Theme – Moby

6. Mundian to Bach Ke – Panjabi MC

7. Habbeza [Trance Mix] – Harem

8. Flight IC408 – State of Bengal

9. Poison – Prodigy

10. Religion [Bass Under Siege] – Front 242

11. Rama Communication [Beastmasters Radio Mix] – State of Bengal

12. Dhol Rinse – Asian Dub Foundation

13. Cowgirl – Underworld
