The Pancake Rocks
On the desolate west coast of the South Island, most of the main attractions are rocky in nature (rock formations, mountains, cliffs, etc.). We visited the "Pancake Rocks," near Punakaiki, which are rocks that look, as you might guess, like stacks of pancakes.
The reason for that is because the rocks used to be part of the seafloor, where two different kinds of rock alternated in layers. Since the rocks rose from the sea, the softer type of rock (sandstone, I believe) eroded from the pounding of the waves, leaving the harder layers sticking out.
