Milford Sound
Milford Sound is a fiord in the south of the South Island, in a region called
Fiordland. It is right on a major faultline, which is the cause for its
dramatic beauty. Of all the places in New Zealand, Milford Sound is probably
the number-one must-see attraction.
The Sound winds inland from the Tasman Sea, flanked on both sides by sheer
steep rock faces that shoot up from the water's edge. The scale of this place
makes even big international cruise ships look like bathtub toys.
It rains 200 days a year there, and we took a boat cruise in typical rainy
weather. When it rains, waterfalls cascade down the mountains and pour into the
Sound. Fog floats above the water as the mountains play hide-and-seek.
It has to be seen in person to be believed, because the scenery simply doesn't
fit into a camera.
